Roles of Muscles in Movement
Muscles pull.
This is the key to remember when analyzing any movement of the body.
In each action there are muscles that either work together are oppose each other to make the numerous combinations of intricate movements we do each day.
The muscle that has the major responsibility for a certain moment is the prime mover (agonist).
The muscle that opposes the prime mover is the antagonist - the action of this muscle is the opposite of the prime mover.
A synergist helps the prime mover by either assisting in the same action OR by stabilizing the joint to make the job of the prime mover easier.
Each movement the body makes is a smooth & precise coordinated effort.
