Skeletal Pathologies & Conditions
Inflammatory Conditions |
Bursitis, tendonitis and arthritis are all inflammatory conditions which affect the skeletal system.
Bursitis is the inflammation of a bursa, usually caused by a blow or friction
Tendonitis is inflammation of the tendon sheath, which attaches muscles to the skeleton
Arthritis is the inflammation of the joints; there are over 100 different types of arthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common chronic arthritis, and is most likely related to normal aging; frequently occurs unilaterally
Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease; symptoms began with bilateral inflammation of coordinating joints and can often lead to deformities

Postural Deviations
Postural deviation can occur with either an increase or a decrease of the normal vertebral curves. This leads to uneven pressure within the joint surfaces, strained ligaments and excessive strain and/or overstitching of associated musculature to compensate for the exaggeration.
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine. It can occur as a single curve ("C" shaped) or multiple curves ("S" shaped). The most common type is Idiopathic scoliosis, which means the cause is unknown. It typically affects adolescent females. Degenerative scoliosis can occur with aging due to degeneration of the intervertebral discs and facet joints. Neuromuscular (myopathic) scoliosis occurs as a secondary condition to another condition in the body in which an individual has weakness in the postural muscles or lack of nerve stimulation to them (as in muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, paralysis, etc). Scoliosis may be treated with any combination of bracing, surgery & physical therapy.

Kyphosis is an increase in the posterior curvature of the thoracic spine. This can be visibly noticeable as a rounded back, commonly referred to as a "hunch back". This condition is more common in females than in males. Most commonly, this condition develops as a result of poor posture. Physical therapy and massage therapy may play a great role in strengthening overstretched muscles and relaxing hypertrophic muscles.
