Spinal Cord
white matter - makes up the inner portion of the brain & outer portion of the spinal cord. It is made up of myelinated axons and coordinates communication pathways.
gray matter - makes up the outer portion of the brain & inner portion of the spinal cord. It is made up of mostly of neuron cell bodies. The primary function of gray matter is to carry sensory information to the brain for processing.
ventral root - branch of the spinal cord that exits the spinal column anteriorly and continues on its way to a specific area of the body. Motor neurons carry signals away from the central nervous system towards the limbs & organs.
dorsal root - contains sensory neurons that transmit information like pain & temperature sensations
dorsal root ganglion - cluster of sensory nerve cell bodies
