Anatomical terms of movement are used to describe the actions of muscles on the skeleton.
Muscles contract to produce movement at joints.

Flexion
movement that makes the angle between two bones at their joint smaller |
Extension
movement that makes the angle between two bones at their joint larger |
Abduction
moving a part away from the midline of the body |
Adduction
moving a part towards the midline of the body |
Lateral Rotation
movement around an axis, away from the midline of the body |
Medial Rotation
movement around an axis, towards the midline of the body |
Supination
rotation of the forearm resulting in the palm facing anteriorly (turned upwards) |
Pronation
rotation of the forearm resulting in the palm facing posteriorly (turned downwards) |
Dorsiflexion
movement of the ankle in which the dorsum of the foot is pointed upwards ("toes to nose") |
Plantarflexion
movement of the ankle in which the plantar surface of the foot is pointed downwards ("pointing toes") |
